After surgery, when you get home, start with clear fluids. (Remember that your gums/mouth will be numb for a couple of hours, so avoid hot fluids/food.)
EXAMPLES OF CLEAR FLUIDS:
- Juices such as Cranberry, Apple, or Grape
- Iced Tea or Warm Tea (room temperature)
- Ginger Ale
- Gatorade®/Vitamin Water®
- Pedialyte®
Progress slowly to more substantial foods. If you have a sensitivity to dairy, you may want to avoid milk products.
EXAMPLES OF SOFT FOOD ITEMS:
- Hearty Soups (cream of asparagus, lentil, minestrone, split pea)
- Yogurt (soft or frozen)
- Cottage Cheese
- Pudding, Custard, Jell-O®
- Soft Fruit (bananas, papaya, canned peaches or pears)
- Ice Cream, Milkshakes
- Fresh, Cooked Vegetables (steamed or overcooked)
- Fruit Smoothies, Protein Shakes
- Oatmeal/Cream of Wheat
- Eggs (scrambled, soft boiled, omelet, egg salad)
- Pancakes
- Mashed Potatoes
- Rice, Risotto, Polenta
- Tofu
- Pasta (plain or with sauce)
- Fish (soft white fish, sole, trout, snapper)
PLEASE AVOID THE FOLLOWING (FOR THE FIRST WEEK FOLLOWING SURGERY):
- Citrus Juices (orange/pineapple)
- Spicy Foods
- Foods That Are Difficult to Chew
- Popcorn, Chips, Seeds, and Nuts
- French Bread/Baguettes
- Alcoholic Beverages
- Use of Straws
Rest and relax for the first few days: catch up on unseen movies, or finish up the book you 've been meaning to get to, and have a relaxing recovery. Remember, it is important to maintain nutrition for optimal healing recovery. Also, stay hydrated, so drink lots of fluids.
